The Bauhaus – one of the most important schools of Modernism – is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. On the occasion of the anniversary the German design centres “Stilwerk” presents at three venues “Re:Form – An Homage to 100 Years of Bauhaus”. The German artist trio Olff Appold, Kai Brüninghaus and Jürgen Sandfort strived for reformulating and interpreting the history of the art school with contemporary pictorial imagery and techniques which is visually captivating and this is exactly where Hahnemühle paper comes into play.
“I have known and appreciated Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl Paper for many years. Right from the start, it was the perfect choice for our exhibition. The works show the whole spectrum from classical to experimental photography as well as graphics and designs to set the humankind in connection with furniture design icons,” explains photographer Olff Appold. Together with a communication designer and an illustrator, he had the idea of rediscovering and celebrating the unique Bauhaus design that continues to shape our world of forms to this day. Hahnemühle’s finest inkjet paper plays an important role as a medium for the exhibition.

“The FineArt Pearl delivers both the high quality of a black and white Vintage Baryt print with its deep black, as well as the artistic aesthetics of a historic Dye Transfer colour print in all its beauty. On this paper we got exactly the artistic expressiveness that is clearly visible in our search for traces of the effects of the Bauhaus School in museum-quality prints,” sums up Olff Appold.
From 8 May to 8 June 2019, around 80 works of art will be on display at Stilwerk Hamburg, initially as part of the Hamburg Architecture Summer, flanked by original furniture, formal quotations and contemporary product innovations from Bauhaus-inspired furniture and lifestyle brands. The exhibition will then move on to the design destinations Stilwerk Berlin (17 June to 17 July 2019) and Stilwerk Düsseldorf (19 August to 19 September 2019).
All photographic works by Olff Appold are printed on Hahnemühle Digital FineArt paper: FineArt Pearl and Photo Rag® Ultra Smooth – a glossy and a matt FineArt inkjet paper. “Our goal is the associative mediation of 100 years of Bauhaus, visually stirring and stylistically up-to-date. To this end, we are developing a contemporary representation of the Bauhaus idea using the formal codes of the past and today’s digital representation and printing possibilities,” says photographer Olff Appold.
Between art and craftsmanship, between history and the present – in this area of tension, the exhibition juxtaposes original Bauhaus furniture, post-war form quotations and contemporary Bauhaus-related products. “Re:Form” comprises classical and experimental photography, showing the synthesis of photography and graphics through to short films, digital animations and visualisations.
The artist trio, supported by Stilwerk and Hahnemühle, has reinterpreted the products of numerous Bauhaus-inspired furniture and lifestyle brands: including ARTEMIDE, BULTHAUP, KPM, Montblanc, Tecta and many more.
