The Background
First held in 1861 by Edinburgh Photographic Society the exhibition is one of the most highly regarded photographic exhibitions in the UK and one of the few print-only international salons in the world. Each year, the exhibition attracts thousands of entries from photographers across the globe, drawn by its long history, high standards and distinctive focus on the printed image.
Listen to what the judges have to say:
What Makes The Edinburgh International Exhibition Unique?
The Edinburgh International has a big commitment to quality. We only accept as many prints as can be physically displayed. Gaining an acceptance here is a significant achievement, highly prized by photographers who return to compete year after year.
The exhibition receives patronage from Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographic (FIAP), Global Photographic Union (GPU), Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) and Scottish Photographic Federation (SPF) and medals and ribbons from these patrons will be awarded to the best entries.
Where Is The Exhibition?
All accepted prints are exhibited at the Society’s premises in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. Every year we welcome thousands of visitors from around the world. Many return each year to see how photographers continue to interpret the world through their lenses. Each visitor will receive a catalogue which contains a reproduction of all accepted prints. Which is a permanent record of the prints they’ve seen.
