The cartoon plot:
Two brothers who could not be more different: One is tall, somewhat deceitful and rude, the other is a sensitive and naive boy, how you can be as the younger child. Together, they do all day what you are supossed to do as siblings – they offend each other. But the smaller one would not actually not be in any trouble since he still needs to always accept defeat. Especially now, when even the other children go after him too. And only because he holds the hand of his brother! But if worst comes to worst, they have to stick together. Formost for siblings which are processed with rookie.
The creative process:
It is clear that you need for much paper an animated cartoon. Our cartoon “Holding Brother´s hand or how the jelly explodes” although had been created digital for the most part we made concepts and drawed textures on paper that we scanned and added to our digital drawings in digital composing.
I use the sketchbooks from Hahnemühle for several years now since the paper quality is great and the price is very affordable. We used different Hahnemühle papers such as Layout Paper, Manga and Sketch Paper for studies and concepts as we were looking for a pretty kidlike design for the characters and the backgrounds. I still prefer making sketches on paper as well as the first rough storyboards. Since we had a strict deadline we opted for the computer to animate more efficiently. We wanted nevertheless the best possible analog look of our cartoon. Therefore, we have also painted on paper small areas with markers and watercolors, which we have scanned. These scans had been used as textures and references. Then we tried with the software programs to create brushes that are similar to textures made on paper. With these brushes we have ultimately the characters coloured.
After more than 3600 digital drawings, colouration and compositing, a lot of work on music and sound design by musician Marius Kirsten, the film was finally finished after about four months of work. We are very proud that we were able to celebrate our premiere at the International Animated Film Festival in Stuttgart in 2014 and that the film is still on show at many international festivals in the children’s program. We already work meticulously on new projects. And a small sketch by Hahnemühle is always in your pocket.
