inherit\">While the life of a freelancer is somewhat solitary by nature, they were perhaps the most prepared when lockdown restrictions were first imposed last year. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Indeed, it was during the first lockdown in the UK that graphic designer Jessie Cohen&#8217;s fine art alter-ego &#8216;Chromakane&#8217; was born. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">In the months that followed, her creative life has enjoyed inspiration, experimentation and collaboration &#8211; all from the comfort of her home studio.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">\u201cChromakane is my lockdown project,\u201d laughs Jessie. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">\u201cI was in between jobs and drawing was something that had always given me a different kind of creative release than my day job. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Drawing every day, especially drawing organic forms, gave me that sense of release. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">A portmanteau of &#8216;chroma&#8217; (meaning purity or intensity of color) and &#8216;akane&#8217; (the Japanese word for deep red), Chromakane is a project that allows her to play with multiple media, combining traditional techniques with digital and use the power of Instagram and other channels to get online feedback from her fellow artists and art lovers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Drawing every day sounds like quite the commitment until you realize that repetition isn&#8217;t something that features heavily in Chromakane&#8217;s working style. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">A piece of artwork could just as easily begin with a pencil as a stylus &#8211; or a brush, or a spray can &#8211; and develops out as she sees fit, with most pieces ending as prints (\u201cmy core product is art prints, original canvases and screen prints \u201d) but always with one eye on the future. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">\u201cMy concept for the project is to take all of my illustrations and visual ideas and translate them onto as many canvases as possible,\u201d she explains. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">\u201cExploring different techniques when it comes to print and reproduction. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Working in more three-dimensional ways, getting my work onto fashion products or ceramics &#8211; even tattoo art. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">And as such, all Chromakane&#8217;s work tends to undergo some level of digital &#8216;clean up&#8217;, either in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, where she might also add in new colors before outputting the piece onto the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canon-europe.com\/printers\/inkjet\/pixma\/pixma_pro-10s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Canon PIXMA PRO-10S<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"> printer in her studio. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">\u201cPrinting with the Canon printer I&#8217;ve noticed that I get a result that I don&#8217;t get when I&#8217;m using other mediums &#8211; even drawing with a black marker. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">The depth and intensity of the black almost feels like a screen print, &#8220;she says. And while she experiments with textured digital fine art surfaces, such as Hahnem\u00fchle German etching papers, lately she has been printing on <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hahnemuehle.co.uk\/photo-ragr-pearl-a3-x-25-sheets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Hahnem\u00fchle Photo Rag Pearl<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"> .<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">The smoother surface lends itself well to her new and experimental finishing touches, such as 24-carat gold leaf, a process that she admits can be &#8220;pretty tricky &#8211; very hit and miss &#8211; inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">While having the opportunity to focus undisturbed on work can be excellent for productivity, we humans need each other for our mutual wellbeing, to share ideas and learn. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">For Jessie, this meant seeking out a like-minded community of artists and creatives online. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">\u201cThere&#8217;s been a great effort from the online community to be more present and active. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">So, I have been connecting with others, and able to share skills and opinions with other artists, especially on platforms like Instagram. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">&#8220;It is in this way that she has become involved with <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artisthecure.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">&#8216;Art is the Cure&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"> .<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">The platform, founded by the world-renowned pop and street artist Rich Simmons, came about through an epiphany he had following his autism diagnosis (\u201cSomething sparked in me, and I realised those four words is what I was supposed to be doing\u201d) . <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit\">Art is the Cure brings artists together as a means of \u201cinspiring people by educating them about the power of creative therapy\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]They hold talks and workshops to spread the message of the healing power of art in all its forms and Jessie was given the opportunity to share her story with the network \u201cto show how art is therapeutic to me, how I overcome challenges \u2013 whether mental challenges or professional challenges \u2013 through creativity. \u201d\u00a0As an ambassador for the organization, she uses her practice as a platform to talk about their work.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve had creative or artistic ability ever since I was a kid, but a lot of people don\u2019t realize that they have a creative skill, ready to be unlocked,\u201d she explains.\u00a0\u201cThey may think that it is exclusive and just for artists, but it\u2019s not.\u00a0There are so many forms of that you can channel \u2013 whether it\u2019s music or cooking.\u00a0And it really does help to find that release.\u00a0It can keep you grounded during a difficult time. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>The lockdown project that\u2019s taken flight shows no sign of slowing down and Jessie is now able to divide her time between freelancing and Chromakane, taking her work in as many different directions as possible \u2013 including her first curated exhibition in Paris as part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.galerie-sakura.com\/exhibition\/sneakers-generation\">Galerie Sakura\u2019s Sneakers generation<\/a>, where she has on show a custom designed white Nike shoe, inspired by her original art prints.\u00a0She hopes to take part in more shows in the future, \u201cdepending on how things open up now galleries are welcoming artists.\u201d\u00a0Lockdown has certainly restricted access to art and Jessie looks forward to a time when more galleries feel comfortable to invite viewers in as they traditionally did, pre-Covid.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s difficult with finding new places for people to engage with art in a physical space.\u00a0In the meantime, I\u2019ve been working with online galleries, and I\u2019m loving the online opportunities to experiment and network, meet
