ArtStar: How did you get started in the art printing business? \u00a0Are you an artist yourself?
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Aleks:<\/strong> Absolutely not. \u00a0My painting skills approach that of a 10yr old and drawing is only incrementally better, so\u00a0seriously NO, definitely NOT an artist. <\/span> I do love woodworking, but if you consider the countless \u201cin-progress\u201d (read: never gonna finish) woodworking projects that I\u2019m working on,\u00a0I\u2019m not sure if that qualifies. \u00a0 Photography is a big love of mine as well, and\u00a0I do like to get out and shoot whatever\/whenever possible, especially if it can be turned into a road trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for getting started in art\u00a0printing, it\u2019s not very sexy\u00a0I suppose but in a previous life I was a partner at a Discovery and Trial Presentation Services company where I technically got my start in wide format\u00a0printing. \u00a0This wasn\u2019t fine art\u00a0printing\u00a0by any means but we utilized similar equipment and I was able to cut my teeth by\u00a0printing\u00a0trial presentation artwork for clients and learning digital capture techniques. \u00a0Fast forward to 2005 when a good friend approached me about helping him build a company that would serve both as a marketplace for art shoppers as well as a platform for\u00a0emerging\u00a0artists. \u00a0I\u00a0jumped at the chance, and we went on to build Imagekind.com. \u00a0It was there that\u00a0I\u00a0really learned about things like proper\u00a0image preparation, substrates, why pigment ink is better, colorimetry and most importantly how to build a color managed workflow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Artstar: Why are ArtStar prints gallery quality prints?
\n<\/span><\/strong>Aleks:<\/strong> Well for a number of reasons. \u00a0The most obvious reason of course is the content and quality of subject matter on ArtStar. \u00a0But beyond that, ArtStar\u00a0prints\u00a0are gallery quality prints\u00a0for three very simple reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n

    ArtStar: What do Hahnemuhle paper and archival mean?<\/span><\/strong>
    \n<\/span><\/strong>Aleks:<\/strong> Honestly the two are synonymous with each other. \u00a0In the context of art\u00a0printing, archival means long life. \u00a0Prints\u00a0made using archival techniques are expected to not only live but also look perfect, for tens if not hundreds of years. Similarly, Hahnemuhle is the oldest paper mill in existence, dating back 4 centuries and I believe were the first to invent inkjet capable fine art papers. \u00a0Though there are now lots of choices available in fine art papers both for art reproductions as well as photography, Hahnemuhle still represent the pinnacle of quality in archival\u00a0printing\u00a0and is among our favorite paper manufacturers.

    ArtStar: What do you and Spoon (your dog) like to do on the weekends?<\/span><\/strong>
    \nAleks:<\/strong> When she\u2019s not on Tinder, Spoons favorite weekend activities include\u00a0harassing any and all birds (and\/or skateboarders) and adding to her stick collection. \u00a0Oh and swimming; preferably in fast moving river water, although crashing waves on\u00a0the coast is ok too.
    \n<\/span>As for me, I just do whatever spoon tells me.<\/span><\/p>\n

    ArtStar: What is your favorite ArtStar print and why?
    \n<\/span><\/strong>Aleks:<\/strong> Oh man that\u2019s tough. \u00a0I really love a lot of the work on ArtStar for different reasons. \u00a0As a hobbyist photographer\u00a0I like to shoot a lot of architecture and\u00a0city\/landscapes\u00a0so\u00a0I\u2019m drawn to images like Urbanology #3<\/em> (Irene Suchocki), Glitter at Dusk<\/em> (Irene Suchocki) and CA-58<\/em> (Noel Kerns). \u00a0Zaria Forman is amazing and Greenland #62<\/em> in particular is\u00a0monumental for me. \u00a0I\u2019m totally fascinated by big wave riding and the guts that it takes to commit to that, so\u00a0I\u2019m really loving Late Drop<\/em> (Grant Rohloff). \u00a0 \u00a0All that said, my fav piece right now is Mark Mann\u2019s portrait of Bill Murray<\/em>\u00a0because it\u2019s\u00a0beautiful, imperfect, demonstrative and more\u00a0importantly it makes me laugh every time\u00a0I look at it.<\/span><\/p>\n
