She <span class=\"hps alt-edited\">creates<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps alt-edited\">primarily<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">feminine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">black and white<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">shots<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">The<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">encaustic<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">technique<\/span> gives <span class=\"hps alt-edited\">her photographs<\/span> a <span class=\"hps\">dreamy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">personal style<\/span>. She enjoys sharing here knowledge in workshops, which are very popular.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>When did you discover your passion for photography?<\/strong><br \/>\nI discovered photography in high school. I was lured in by the darkroom and began my journey with silver printing. Photography connected me with people and gave me an excuse to go places.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you come<\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6822.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7756\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6822-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"(C) Leah MacDonald\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6822-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6822-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6822.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong> to the world of commercial \/ fine art photography?<\/strong><br \/>\nI am an artist and had been working for 10 years as an adjunct photography professor, doing commercial photography on the side.\u00a0 When I got laid off from my teaching job I began doing more commercial work, balancing it with my fine art.\u00a0 My passion is in my creative projects.\u00a0 I primarily photograph women.\u00a0 My art stems from my emotions &#8212; I use women to narrate my feelings and the constant changes in life.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Which of your projects\/motifs opened the door to the art market\/professional market?<\/strong><br \/>\nMy biggest commercial art project was a sponsored show titled In My Body. It brought light to the prevalence of body issues facing women.\u00a0 The show traveled to multiple venues with the main exhibition at the Wexler Gallery in <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/155048_136051483116391_5367874_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7775 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/155048_136051483116391_5367874_n-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"155048_136051483116391_5367874_n\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Philadelphia.<br \/>\nAnother turning point was when I began teaching encaustic photography workshops.\u00a0 The workshops continue to be very successful.\u00a0 Many photographers \u00a0crave a new way to express tactile creativity in this digital age where they so often feel a lack of individuality and self-expression.\u00a0 Incorporating encaustic painting techniques into their photography allows the artist&#8217;s \u201chand\u201d to return to the art making process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who inspires you most?<\/strong><br \/>\nThat is a really hard question. I love all photography\u2026 even when the technical qualities are not quite there\u2026 I love art and respect the people who choose to live the life and make art no matter what.<br \/>\nDiane Arbus, Francesca Woodman, Larry Sultan\u2026 Some of my favorites have passed and left us too soon while the rest of us are still here working on it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe your personal photography style?<\/strong><br \/>\nMy style\u2026 well, I am Leah. I make work that is raw and edgy, daring. I am constantly changing.\u00a0 I thrive on experimentation but am always strongly rooted in black and white and the female form. I try to be true to my feelings\u2026 make the work even if I am unsure of exactly what it is as I\u2019m forming it. I feel like art is a pulse.\u00a0 You can feel it very strongly but then it slips away and gets lost in other noises and distractions of life.\u00a0 When I have inspiration I try to work as much as I can, exhaust the creativity, so when it passes I have achieved something.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is most challenging about your work\/projects?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe unknown. Nothing is secure.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6782.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7754\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/07\/LEE_6782-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"(C) Leah MacDonald\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>How important is the printed presentation of your works of art?<\/strong><br \/>\nImportant! I am very particular about my materials. I am very lucky to have support from Hahnemuhle. I was very resistant to digital photography at first but the Hahnemuhle paper really won my heart. I really enjoy the papers I am using now and it has helped me to really appreciate digital printing now. I printed my last show on William Turner paper and I just loved it.\u00a0 It was like thick rag paper soaked in black ink\u2026 so gritty and deep.\u00a0 Really beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which is your favorite Hahnem\u00fchle paper and why?<\/strong><br \/>\nI used to love the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/digital-fineart\/digital-fineart-collection\/matt-fineart\/p\/Product\/show\/42\/150.html\">308 Photo Rag<\/a>\u2026 then I met <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/digital-fineart\/digital-fineart-collection\/matt-fineart\/p\/Product\/show\/9\/9.html\">William Turner.<\/a> It is just amazing! It offers the best blacks and has the most amazing surface.\u00a0 It\u2019s 3-D!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have a dream project you would like to realize sometime?<\/strong><br \/>\nMy dream project is\u2026 to be an artist full-time.\u00a0 To live fully in my dream and not have to be distracted by anything else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next?<\/strong><br \/>\nI want to continue to challenge myself with photography, master it and fully grasp all that it can do.<br \/>\nI want to work with extreme sunlight\u2026 bright light and big heavy shadows.
