He speaks passionately and with extensive knowledge on creating fine art prints for artists from around the world and the importance of printing in this digital age. Preferably large so no detail will escape the viewer\u2019s attention and the craftsmanship and all the time and effort you put into your photograph will come to the surface. To me craftsmanship of photography and digital printing are the essential elements of a work of art. Everything else is just a digital picture.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div first  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  \">\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section\">\n<div class=\"avia_textblock \">\n<p><strong><em>Red Ognita:<\/em><\/strong> I have never seen a person refine faster\u00a0in the craft of photography than a person who just started to print their work. The print is unforgiving. Every mistake that you make will be seen in a print. That slight movement will produce a \u201cghost-like\u201d blur. That chromatic aberration brought about by the lens you have and the f-stop of your choice will be evident. That pixel that you pushed or pull more than it can take \u2013 yup! banding. And that dust-spot that you failed to clean up will annoy you to no end. Every little thing that you did not intend to do shall be shown to you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So why print?<\/strong><br \/>\nYou probably know some of the reasons already. The internet has a sea of\u00a0reasons. From technology mishaps, to heightened value for your work, monetary gain, to memories kept even if you fail. The list goes on and on why should you print your work. But let me\u00a0add three\u00a0reasons from a personal standpoint in the mix.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8321\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/09\/Greg-Metro.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8321\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8321 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/09\/Greg-Metro-300x199.png\" alt=\"Greg Metro\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Greg Metro on Photo Rag\u00ae308<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>1. It makes you sharper<\/strong>.<br \/>\nPrinting makes you more aware of your every move. Having in mind that what you create will be printed\u00a0later imposes\u00a0a discipline that you never had before. From the moment you plant that tripod to the point you send it over to the printer \u2013 every move calculated. Every adjustment will be precise\u00a0and purposeful. You will understand\u00a0the meaning of\u00a0<em>adjustment in small increments<\/em>. You will learn how to be patient. You\u2019ll develop a flow of work \u2013 of things to check and double check.\u00a0You will learn the value of consistency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. It\u2019s there.<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can actually hold it. It is physical. Everybody can see it where it hangs. Everybody can hold it if you allow them to. Every hour that you spend shooting is an hour away from your home.\u00a0You have decided that your photography is more important during that time. Every penny that you spend for your photography is a penny away from something else. Don\u2019t you want something to show for? A million brushes but no painting? A print is a tangible object created by you. There was nothing, and now there is something. And you made that possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. It\u2019s a legacy \u2013 yours.<\/strong><br \/>\nWith the proper care, your prints will outlast you. It will be something that you will be leaving behind. It is something that you have created out of love and nothing else. It was yours and yours alone. Dictated by no one and was a source of your pride and joy. It is the way you have seen the world \u2013 literally and figuratively. It will be something worth keeping.<\/p>\n<p>As it is with many things in life, everything\u00a0is not for everyone. Printing may not be for you. But if you\u2019re serious in your photography\u00a0and would like to refine your work \u2013 try printing. Best if you yourself will do it \u2013 learning\u00a0will be efficient and\u00a0much faster, but it doesn\u2019t have to be you. Take into account the economics of a printer and the regularity of printing your work. You can have a custom lab <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/digital-fineart\/certified-studio\/certified-studios.html\" target=\"_blank\">(Hahnem\u00fchle Certified Studio)<\/a> do it and,\u00a0maybe\u00a0ask for a feedback or a friend that has a printer. Print it. Sign it. Date it. Keep it. When you look back, you\u2019ll be happy you did.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Choosing paper for your photographic work<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3  blockquote modern-quote modern-centered  avia-builder-el-9  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_textblock  \">\n<div class=\"av-subheading av-subheading_below \">\n<p>Aside from what printer to purchase, one of the most common questions I get asked is what paper to choose. One of the most important choices you\u2019d make when printing is your choice of substrate. Today, with a multitude of options, one can easily find himself lost and confused. Trying and testing fine art papers is expensive and time-consuming. I know, I\u2019ve been there. Without diving\u00a0too much on the technical side, let me try to help you out narrowing it down. You can start by doing either or all of the following:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section\">\n<div class=\"avia_textblock \">\n<ul>\n<li>See it for yourself. Expose yourself to different kinds of prints. Check them out. Touch\u00a0them if you can. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/hahnemuehle\/albums\/72157649068214728\" target=\"_blank\">Hahnem\u00fchle Sample Books at trade shows or at a dealer or printlab<\/a>) Do you see your work being in its best with that kind of media?<\/li>\n<li>Consult with your trusted printer.<\/li>\n<li>Request\/Purchase a Sample Pack from the paper manufacturer. A sample pack normally consists of 2 sheets per variety in A4 size. Print Gamut is also affected by the color space of camera, computer and printer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brightness<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Brightness is a measurement of light reflectance of a specific wavelength of blue\u00a0light. Simply put \u2013 brightness represents a more narrow measurement of light\u00a0reflectance than whiteness. Some papers\u00a0use optical brighteners (OBA\u2019s) to extend the paper\u2019s tonal range.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dmax<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0How black is black? It is a measure of the deepest black tone a printer\/ink\/paper combination can reproduce.\u00a0Prints with poor Dmax look pale and weak. You would notice that glossy paper produces blacker black than matte paper.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Longevity<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 It describes the media\u2019s archivability and resistance to fading. Important to museeums, galleries and long-term collectors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Durability<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The media\u2019s ability to resist abrasion, wobbling, kinking, folding and scratching.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div first  avia-builder-el-13  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_full  column-top-margin\">\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section\">\n<div class=\"avia_textblock \">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Technical fact sheets can easily be obtained through the paper manufacturer\u2019s website. If you\u2019re wondering why some of the technical information is not disclosed by the paper manufacturer, it is because some traits are dependent on paper\/ink and printer combination, and they wouldn\u2019t know what you\u2019re using. If in doubt, ask <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/digital-fineart\/icc-profile.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hahnem\u00fchle\u00b4s Technical Application Center<\/a> via phone or email for support.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><b>Aesthetic<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Natural paper or synthetic Resin Coated (RC)?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Reflectivity \u2013 Glossy or Matte?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Texture \u2013 Smooth or textured?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Weight \u2013 Thick \u00a0or thin papers?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Edges \u2013 cutted or deckled?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div first  avia-builder-el-17  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_comments_list  column-top-margin\">\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section\">\n<div class=\"avia_textblock \">\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><b>Matte VS. Glossy<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Matte papers are based on Alpha-cellulose from wood (Hahnemule Bamboo is made from Bamboo fibers) or cotton rag fibers. Their appeal lies in their appearance and\u00a0feel. They have a texture like those used for painting (eg: watercolor paper) \u2013 a look and tactile experience that is simply absent\u00a0in plain photo papers.<span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"> <span class=\"hps\">Matte<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">papers<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">reflect less<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">but<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">may pose<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">shine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a motif<\/span> too. <span class=\"hps\">Matte<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">papers are printed<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">matte black<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">inks<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that produce<\/span> on<span class=\"hps\"> Hahnem\u00fchle<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">papers<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> their <span class=\"hps\">premium<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">inkjet coating<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">deep<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">uniform<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">blackening<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Manufacturers such as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Hahnem\u00fchle<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">offer<\/span> also glossy <span class=\"hps\">(barytes<\/span>) <span class=\"hps\">papers<\/span> which <span class=\"hps\">cover<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">all tastes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">high-gloss<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">semi<\/span><span class=\"atn\">&#8211;<\/span>glossy <span class=\"hps\">or<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">pearlescent<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Glossy papers<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a higher reflectivity<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are printed on with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Photo<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Black<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ink<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">This creates<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">deeper<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">blacks and bold<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">colors<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">combined with the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">desired degree of gloss<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">In short, if<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">you want<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">pictures<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">jump<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">downright<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">out of the paper<\/span>, choose <span class=\"hps\">glossy papers<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">If you<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">want your<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">pictures<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are subtle<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and touching<\/span>, select <span class=\"hps\">matte<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">papers<\/span>.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8322\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/09\/HPR-308-Mitch-Miguel.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8322\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8322 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.hahnemuehle.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/09\/HPR-308-Mitch-Miguel-300x199.png\" alt=\"HPR 308 Mitch Miguel\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Mitch Miguel on Hahnem\u00fchle Photo Rag\u00ae 308<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Personal Choice<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I believe that every photographer that print his work should have at least two personal papers. One glossy and the other, matte. Or two papers of the same kind (matte or glossy) but one with a whiter base and the other with a warm natural white base. This would not only make your life easier when printing, but it would also serve as a\u00a0signature\u00a0paper for you.
