The art platform UPON PAPER is entering its second year and we are looking forward to celebrating the launch of UPON PAPER magazine #03 and the opening of the thematically related group exhibition LOVERS.
The third issue of the elaborately produced XXL magazine will be available at select bookstores, magazine stores, museum shops, and concept stores starting on May 27.
UPON PAPER magazine #03
Defined in terms of an objet de désir, UPON PAPER magazine was destined to take this passion literally in its third issue and to realize the theme of Lovers by means of powerful images.
UPON PAPER #03 thus presents an outstanding lineup of international contributors, including James Franco, Jeff Burton, Larry Clark, Bill Henson, René Groebli, Rosa Loy and Hans Peter Adamski. Many of these works were created specifically for UPON PAPER #03. They recount the most diverse forms of human affection, emotional ties, and companionship. Loving and being loved, amour fou, self-love, first love, and the love of art, as well as the absence and the end of love, are the themes that the newest issue of UPON PAPER magazine deals with-thus touching, recalling, and sympathizing.
It is about lovers and beloveds, for example, in Groebli’s series Das Auge der Liebe (The Eye of Love), which he staged with his wife during their honeymoon in the 1950s, or in Kate Bellm’s cycle Lover, which shows her boyfriend at the diverse stops of their trip around the world together.
In addition, the Berlin artist Hans Peter Adamski has opened up his archive of erotic works on paper, inspired by historical Asian drawings, and he has shared these intimate glimpses with the reader.
The magazine’s new issue also wins over readers through its presentation of the painterly positions of Rosa Loy and James Franco: While Loy’s works appeal to pure femininity, caring, and poetry, the multi-talented Franco celebrates his own personality with self-reflexive and often self-deprecating quotations.
In addition to established positions, talented young artists like the 19 year old New York photography student Jordan Tiberio and the Berlin expat Kate Williams represent important elements in the portfolio of UPON PAPER #03.
GROUP EXHIBITION LOVERS
The exhibition was conceived as a translation of the central theme of LOVERS into three-dimensional space. Beyond those artists presented in the current issue, LOVERS shows additional creatives and their positions regarding this theme.
