Peter and Ursula Schäublin, photographers from Switzerland, had been thinking about this question. They printed their impressive nature photographs from the ‘Iceland Art Project‘ on Hahnemühle PhotoRag® Ultra Smooth and mounted the prints on large steel plates. These plates were exposed to wind and weather in Iceland and weathered during the photo tour. So singular works of art were created.
The ‘Iceland Art Project‘ is in two ways a tribute to the elemental forces of nature. Firstly, Peter and Ursula Schäublin depict the rugged beauty of the Icelandic countryside in picturesque photos and secondly the steel plates to mount the prints on were exposed to the elemental forces of nature and are unique too.
Peter Schäublin explains his idea of uniqueness: “Of course I could register the prints of my photos so I could guarantee exclusivity to collectors. But we were thinking about a combination of one-off a kind artwork and its plate carrier. Our discussions led to the idea of combining photos with an object – the composition of two elements become one individual artistic piece. Hot springs, lava, glaciers, sea, stone deserts. This is associated with Iceland. What would it take raw steel plates and expose them to Icelands untamed natural surrounding? So the motif and frames could stand in an exciting “genetic” respect to each other.
Peter and Ursula Schäublin enthusiastically and professionally implement their project. In the summer of 2014 the photo journey started to Iceland – including 10 heavy steel plates that were attached to their own Land Rover. They photographed on location and blogged diligently on http://www.icelandartproject.ch/blog meanwhile the nature weathered the steel plates.
Back in Switzerland the photographer seriously worked on the large-format presentation of their fine art prints on Hahnemühle PhotoRag® Ultra Smooth. The result provides the highest level of digital fine art printing workflow: from capturing up to the substrate for printing. “Again and again we find that the aspect of paper is underestimated. No digital medium can offer a sensuous beautiful feeling of paper. Like no other company Hahnemühle is dedicated to this experience and THE only brand when it comes to papers that just combine feel and excellent imaging quality, “confirms Peter Schäublin.
In the ‘Iceland Art Project‘ ten original works of art on the weathered steel plates had been created. The artists additionally offer three series: Original Edition, Limited Edition and Open Edition on www.photoriginals.com.
